How do you become a
collector of contemporary art?
by VEO Gallery & FrameWorks
1. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
If you like the work, buy it. Buy art because you love it first, and not because you think it may become valuable!
That way if it does not become valuable at least you still love it!
Have belief in your own taste (but be open to listen to the opinion of others).
Buying art is a leap of faith - that's what makes it wonderful!
2. EDUCATE YOURSELF
Read up about contemporary art. Buy and read all the literature you can lay your hands on about what is considered 'hot' property.
(but also use your own discretion as to what to believe!)
Art publications such as Art SA are wonderful, and also look at lifestyle magazines such as Good Taste, House &
Leisure etc.
Get onto the galleries' mailing lists and go to their exhibition openings.
Visit galleries regularly as a matter of course to see what work is emerging and what is enduring.
3. ASK QUESTIONS
Find out anything you can about the artist. Ask the gallery for the artists artistic history.
Are they likely to continue to work and evolve their art? Is their work popular? Enduring?
Does their style fit yours?
4. DON'T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES
There are going to be purchases that will not be the greatest investment decision you ever made.
Remember collecting is a learning curve.
But if you've followed tip # 1, you will still love it. Also, there is no shame in reselling work.
5. ENJOY YOURSELF
Above all else, enjoy the process of viewing, selecting and buying the art. It should be fun.
Looking forward to seeing you in VEO Gallery...
