Tom Cullberg Friday Night detail

Limited edition prints by local artists Hentie van Der Merwe & Tom Cullberg in collaboration Zhané Warren from Warren Editions. Warren Editions opened late last year and is based in

Bree Street
. The studio facilitates the production of limited edition prints.

The aim of the studio is to introduce contemporary artists who are not primarily printmakers to the time honoured medium of etching. Warren Editions works in etching and other intaglio processes as well as monotype and takes a collaborative approach to develop the artist’s images to their fullest – if need be over an extended period of time.

Art prints are multiple originals, not reproductions. In fine art or original printmaking, the matrix (metal plate) is made by an artist, or under an artist’s direction, without the intention of reproducing a previously existing work of art. There is an endeavor for a balance between content (image) and technique.

Thinking about prints means thinking about collaboration: the print-collaboration between an artist and a printer is intensive, it makes for a situation in which artist and printer influences one another. The printer’s role is to elicit possibilities to the artist and ensuring consistency in the quality of the prints. Many artists have made their greatest and most significant works through the medium of print.

Prints fall into the middle market bracket, which is important to the art market as a whole and is of greatest benefit to artists. Many collectors start off by collecting printed work of art by known artists in this price range.
