2008 critical writer’s workshop and seminar series

As part of its partnership with the Royal Netherlands Embassy, the KZNSA is calling for applications from professional writers and journalists interested in attending an intensive training workshop on art critical writing, scheduled from 26 to 30 May 2008. Facilitated by Sean O’Toole, editor of Art South Africa, participants will spend five days exploring the links between the image and the word. Perceived outcomes of the activity-based workshop include:

  • Developing an understanding and application of the history of art criticism in South Africa and internationally;
  • Developing an appreciation for both textual and visual media;
  • Developing the skills and nuances to allow for mature and intelligent writing on visual art.

Ideal candidates would include people who have education or experience in visual arts, journalism or creative writing, and who would like to include critical writing on arts as part of their portfolio of activities.

In addition, the workshop will include a series of public seminars by leading practitioners in the fields of art critical writing and art history.

To apply, please send:

  • A comprehensive resume;
  • Names and contact details of three professional referees;
  • Three pieces of writing published in the past year.

For further information please call Marie-Claire Seemann on 031 312 3637. Applications are to be emailed to marieclaires@mweb.co.za by Monday, 28 April 2008.
