Countdown for ACT Awards 2007 Nominations

There are only 10 days left for members of the public to submit their nomination for The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) Awards 2007 presented by Nedbank. The annual Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) Awards are an important part of ACT’s work in support of the arts, culture and heritage in South Africa. The prestige associated with being nominated as a finalist or winning an award serves as a measure of quality in the sector. Through the Awards, ACT has developed a network of  sponsors and media partners who promote artists and the sector. The ACT Awards 2007 is supported by CLASSICfeel Magazine, the Cape Town radio partner is Fine Music Radio 101.3 and the Gauteng radio partner is 102.7 Classic fM.

Finalists and winners for the ACT Awards 2007 will be awarded in the following categories based on implementation, sustainability, success and innovation of projects and services, which support and nurture South Africa’s abundant artistic and cultural heritage: The ACT Cultural Development Award 2007, The ACT Arts Education Award 2007, The ACT Arts Correspondent Award 2007, The ACT Arts Management Award 2007, The ACT Chairperson's Award 2007 and the The ACT Lifetime Achievement Award 2007. All nominations must be submitted on the prescribed nomination which can be downloaded from www.act,org.za.

Mike Ford, General Manager of 102.7 Classic fM comments that there is a great synergy between the initiatives of the Arts and Culture Trust and the many musical developments supported by Classic fM. “Apart from supporting music development from ‘grass root’ level to professional musicians, Classic fM is continually involved with music production and recording as well as numerous ongoing concert events. We cherish and support the goals of the Arts and Culture Trust,” he said.

According to Fine Music Radio Station Manager, Victoria Cawood “As a classics and jazz community radio station that supports and encourages the development of arts and culture in the Western Cape, from rural and community performances to the major professional stages, we wholeheartedly endorse all Arts and Culture Trust initiatives.”

The judging panel for the ACT Awards 2007 includes US Consulate Senior Cultural Specialist Ismail Mohammed; Vinette Ebrahim of 7de Laan fame; editor and publisher of The South African Art Times, Gabriel Clarke-Brown and Woutrine Theron, Head of Drama at Tshwane University of Technology. Category sponsors of the ACT Awards 2007 include The Vodacom Foundation, Distell, Sun International, Exclusive Books and The South African Art Times. The Department of Arts and Culture, Nedbank, The Royal Netherlands Embassy, Sun International and The Vodacom Foundation are the Founding Trustees of ACT and Athol Fugard is Patron of the Trust.

Performance poet Lebo Mashile and comedian David Newton will MC the ceremony to announce the winners of the ACT Awards 2007 on 31 October at Nedbank Sandton in Johannesburg.
