The second Africa Remix panel discussion – Digital Africa - took place at the Johannesburg Art Gallery on Saturday, July 28 from 10am to 3pm. Africa Remix: Contemporary Art of a Continent – which is on at the Johannesburg Art Gallery until September 30 – features the work of more than 85 artists from 25 countries on the African continent and the Diaspora. In partnership with Trinity Session the Digital Africa panel comprised of two sessions which focused on technology in Africa and its uses related to the visual arts. The panel focused on how Africa can advance in the technological world and how it influences the making of art and shaping contemporary African art.

The panel included, Lorna Abungu (Kenya and Board member of AfricanColours.net ), Bassam El-Baroni (Egypt), Adam Haupt (Cape Town) and in Johannesburg William Kentridge, Ishmail Farouk, Mphethi Morojele, Pavlo Phitides, Jason Hobbs, Aryan Kaganof and Christo Doherty. Moderators are Stephen Hobbs and Marcus Neustetter. It will include artist projects, online and mobile contributions and a live report from Zambia.

 

The next Africa Remix panel discussion is African Intellectuals on August 25. This focuses on current contemporary African theorists who will be presenting discussions around Afropolitanism and its manifestations in various creative fields. Held in partnership with WISER at Wits University, panelists include Achille Mbembe, Sarah Nuttall, Ato Quayson, Sipho Seepe, Thembinkosi Goniwe and Mbulelo Mzamane.
A panel discussion focusing on Museums and Exhibitions in Africa will follow in September. The final discussion will also be held in September in conjunction with the Art Historians Conference.  Panel discussions focusing on museums in Africa and an arts historians' conference will be held later in the year.
