Call for young concrete sculptor awards entries

PPC is calling on all artists “young” in the art of sculpting to enter the 2007 PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards. Artworks will be judged on concept, craftsmanship, aesthetic appeal and a balance between technical excellence and commercial appreciation with a respect for the medium of concrete. Entries must capture the true essence of the awards with concrete as the main medium. (The artwork may be combined with any other media such as wood, bronze, glass, electronics, etc, but concrete must remain the main media.)

Works are pre selected for the exhibition based on a photographic submission and supporting proposal. Artists are required to submit a minimum of five photographs of each completed artwork. Photographic entries are to be submitted between Monday 17 September and Thursday, 20 September 2007. The pre-selection of works will take place on Wednesday, 26 September and artists will be contacted by telephone or email to confirm whether their artworks were selected for final judging and the exhibition.

The selected artworks must be delivered to the Association of Arts Pretoria on either Tuesday, 23 October 2007 or Wednesday, 24Concrete_Direct October 2007 between 10:00 and 16:00. Final judging will take place on Friday, 26 October 2007. The competition is open to sculpting students 18 years and older, or those with no formal training who have recently become acquainted with concrete as a media.  The official prize-giving ceremony and opening of the two week exhibition of artworks will take place at the Association of Arts Pretoria on the evening of 31 October.

This year’s competition boasts total prize money of R60 000. A first prize of R20 000 will be awarded to the winners in the competition’s two categories: Best Sculpture on Exhibition and Technical Excellence in Concrete Sculpture. The runner-up in each category will receive R7 500. Two merit awards of R2 500 each are presented to artists who demonstrate skill and ability in concrete sculpture.
